The Process

In March 2023, a bond issue failed to receive the 60% voter approval that was needed for Calamus-Wheatland CSD to move forward with multiple improvement projects at its schools.

The previous proposal was based on recommendations by a building committee that included community members. The proposal featured the construction of a new athletic complex near the high school.

Since that outcome, the School Board and administration have continued to examine the district’s facility needs and explore possible solutions.

The district believes this new plan will allow Calamus-Wheatland CSD to address many of its ongoing facility challenges at the elementary school and high school, while also resolving some of the feedback that was received in 2023.

Specifically, the district has:

  • Developed a clear and consistent vision that addresses concerns expressed by some in the community and inspires confidence in the solution.

  • Sought more community engagement and feedback, creating more transparency and a shared vision.

  • Pursued cost-effective solutions that maximize the use of existing facilities, meet current needs, and position the district for future growth as programs prove successful or additional funds become available.

  • Prioritized solutions that improve safety and security.

  • Looked for ways to expand opportunities for students, particularly in the areas of career and technical education.
